Cyber Monday occurs on the Monday immediately following Thanksgiving and is the online version of Black Friday. On Cyber Monday, e-commerce stores offer sales and deals that customers can take advantage of online; whether it’s on a laptop at home or on-the-go with mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.
The term “Cyber Monday” was coined in 2005, after it was observed that Internet traffic and sales on the first day most people return to work after the Thanksgiving weekend surged. While online retailers do not limit sales to Cyber Monday, it marks the start of online marketing for the holiday season.
Between 2006 and 2011, online sales doubled to more than $1.2 billion on Cyber Monday. On Cyber Monday in 2013, online sales soared to $2.3 billion, making it the most lucrative online shopping day in history.
